Femme de l’Ombre is a wordless tale, visual and aural, a tribute to Lotte Reiniger, the early 20th-century director of animated films using cut-out silhouettes.
In her abandoned studio, the artist’s ghost tirelessly pursues her work by cutting out small paper silhouettes. The space is transformed and brought to life, with glimpses of characters moving in enchanting settings, coloured baths illuminating the room, and objects that turn out to be astonishing optical machines.
The artist’s production techniques, dating back to the birth of cinema, are revealed, highlighting the creative genius of this forgotten pioneer.
