Some transformations come without warning. In myths, as in bodies, something changes. Sometimes gradually, sometimes abruptly. Sometimes without us having chosen it.
Metamorphosis is both fascinating and unsettling: it promises a different world, but demands that we let go. It involves shedding one form to inhabit another, and with it comes the question: am I still myself after I have changed?
Echoing the world of Sandra Dufour, who embroiders the transformations of her characters with needle and thread, these two philosophical workshops invite you to unravel the thread of your own metamorphoses: those we go through, those we fear, and those we choose.
No prior knowledge of philosophy is required to take part – just a sense of curiosity!
Workshop 1 — The imposed metamorphosis: when change is forced upon us
‘The chrysalis does not choose to dissolve. Yet something within it is transformed. ’
Growing older, experiencing loss, going through a trial, seeing the world change around you without having wanted it to… Some transformations happen without asking permission. This workshop explores what it feels like to find yourself transformed against your will: is it a loss? An act of violence? Or the beginning of something you didn’t know was possible?
Suitable for all aged 15 and over.
Workshop 2 on Tuesday 8 December at the Varades library.
Attendance at both workshops is recommended but not compulsory. No prior knowledge of philosophy is required.
