Lady Godiva par l’Atypique Compagnie

Come and see “Lady Godiva” performed by the Atypique Compagnie on Saturday 6 March in Couffé.

Jean Canolle’s *Lady Godiva* (1958) is a feminist medieval comedy (aimed at teenagers and adults) adapted from the 11th-century Anglo-Saxon historical legend of Lady Godiva. Lady Godiva, in order to prevent her husband – Earl Leofric – from raising taxes and to avert the hanging of several men who cannot pay him, accepts his challenge to ride naked on horseback through the streets of Coventry in the year 1047. At her husband’s insistence, she sacrifices her body and her virtue to prevent the impoverishment of the population and the condemnation of several residents who cannot afford to pay the Earl.

“A burlesque feminist play,” explains Cécile Gazherian. “We could have called this play *Lady Godiva or the Ride for Women’s Freedom*,” she adds.
