The Grotte des Brûlots and its Way of the Cross.

The history of the grotte des brûlots began in the 19th century, after the apparitions at Lourdes in 1858. Tradition has it that a resident of Pouillé-les-Coteaux, returning from a pilgrimage to Lourdes, left a statuette of the Virgin Mary that he had brought back from his trip at a place called Les Beulots.

Pilgrimages to the grotte des brûlots really began in 1909, with a penitential procession to ask for rain. The parishioners gradually developed the site. They built a new grotto, diverted the stream and created an amphitheatre around the altar.

The calvary dates from 1947 and was blessed by Abbot Rogatien Clavier. The Way of the Cross was built and blessed at the same time.
To this day, the grotto remains a popular place of recollection, known locally for the Assumption celebrations on 15 August.
