Come and discover the history of Vallons de l’Erdre and take a stroll in the grounds of the former château de La Ferronnays.
A fortified castle was first built on the site in the 14th century by Yvon XII de la Jaille. This first castle was subsequently destroyed, first on the orders of Henry IV around 1598, and then by Richelieu around 1618. The dovecote, converted into a water tower, is the only remaining feature of the original estate.
Plans for a new château were drawn up in 1764 by the Reverend Pierre Charles Gaignard, a native of Bonnoeuvre and headmaster of Ancenis College, on behalf of the Ferron de La Ferronnays family.
Heavily damaged during the Revolution and sold off in lots as national property, the La Ferronnays family rebuilt the estate in the mid-19th century.
The main house was demolished between 1912 and 1914. The outbuildings, dating from 1765, were restored between 1906 and 1908.
The grounds, dating from the 18th century and formerly owned by the Cossé-Brissac family, have been listed as a historic monument since 1994 and are part of the ‘Jardins de France’ scheme.
The grounds are open every Sunday and on public holidays, from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm.
